Dine for Debate, Wednesday February 2

Please join us this Wednesday at any one of three amazing Oakland restaurants in a chance to eat delicious food and support a good cause at the same time - tell them you’re with BAUDL, and every bite you eat will benefit this program.

Enjoy a night out — take a break from cooking, enjoy an old favorite, or discover a new classic — and promote the Bay Area Urban Debate League’s valuable efforts to create and maintain debate in the Bay Area’s under-resourced public schools.

Mention BAUDL when making a reservation and dining at these fine Oakland establishments, and they will donate a portion of proceeds to our league.

Spotlight: Rashid Campbell

Rashid makes his voice heard at the BAUDL Public Debate in Spring 2010

A full-ride scholarship to debate at a major state university seemed a long way off for Rashid Campbell during his early youth in Oakland. Seeing so many around him fail to achieve their dreams, he faced an uphill climb to his current success. The challenges brought a sense of urgency to his search for a positive future: “Everyone around me struggling made me wish for a way out. I wanted to break the cycle and find the tools to improve my life.”

Debate has been a way out for Rashid, but it has also been a way to comprehend the world, a way to build the skills and dispositions it takes to lead a life that is meaningful and transformative. “Debate was the tool that helped me understand how to grasp the world around me,” he says. “It allowed me to organize my words and speak my mind so others could understand me.”

Last weekend, more than 80 BAUDL debaters journeyed to the campus of one of the most prestigious universities in the world, but not just for a college visit.  They came to argue their cases for political change, to speak, listen, and debate some of the hottest political topics of the modern era.

For some, this was their first time setting foot on the campus of UC Berkeley; for others, it was the first visit to the campus of any university.  The hope is that as BAUDL students debate in the classrooms of this institution, as they interact with its students as judges and mentors, they will come to know the university as a place where they can find a real and feasible future for themselves.  And it seems to be working; one young man put it like this: “I was a little afraid at first - like, I don’t belong here - but now I feel that I do belong.”

On August 9, 2010, young people from across the Bay Area gathered together for a week of education and uplift in the Bay Area Urban Debate League’s Third Annual Summer Institute. Made possible by the generous support of the Julia Burke Foundation, this event brought students from public schools in Oakland and San Francisco together with top debate educators from around the country to delve into the most pressing issues of the day.

This summer institute was the largest and most successful in the history of the BAUDL: in the end, more than 50 students participated, researching, writing original arguments, and above all debating issues from school dress codes to the war in Afghanistan. Here are just a few highlights from the experience:

Fifteen Students Awarded Scholarships to Prestigious National Debate Camps!

Beginning in mid-July, 15 of the BAUDL’s most dedicated debaters traveled to attend the Cal National Debate Institute at the University of California, Berkeley and the Gonzaga Debate Institute (GDI) in Spokane, Washington – two of the most prestigious debate camps in the nation.  The excursions, made possible by scholarships funded generously by the Julia Burke Foundation, will be filled with lessons in debate theory, technique, and critical thinking, and have already generated serious excitement among the students.  Downtown High School coach Anne Marie Grace recounts the reaction one of her students:

“When he opened the envelope he sat for about 10 minutes (literally) with a big grin on his face and his hand on his chest…In the car on our way back he was asking questions about Washington weather and musing aloud about how he would need to get a back pack for his stuff. Then he burst out, “Oh no! I don’t have a passport!”

With all such logistical problems well-resolved, our students were on their way on July 11.

The BAUDL Summer Institute @ Westlake Middle School, August 9-13

Funded by the Julia Burke Foundation and free of charge to all Oakland and San Francisco Unified School District students, the BAUDL will host its Third Annual Summer Institute.  Boasting a staff of award-winning BAUDL alums, community advocates, lawyers, and decorated college debaters, the five days will focus on everything from debate basics to the 2010-2011 Resolution:  The United States federal government should substantially reduce its military and/or police presence in one or more of the following:  South Korea, Japan, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq, and Turkey.
