The BAUDL Great Debates

BAUDL's young leaders pose after a night of exciting debate.

Of the dozens of young people who are preparing themselves to lead through BAUDL, ten young people from Oakland and Emeryville put on quite a show last Thursday for the BAUDL Great Debates, hosted by the Bay Area Urban Debate League and Standing to Represent Our Next Generation.  The night’s debates hinged on two crucial issues: whether American troops should remain or withdraw from the conflict in Afghanistan; and whether to repeal California’s controversial Proposition 13.

The students were incredibly impressive; many accomplished lawyers were in the audience, and even they were deeply moved by the eloquence and poise of these young leaders.  Please join us in giving appreciation to the hard work that these students put in, doing hours of original research, writing, and speech practice to make the night truly special.  Praise is due also to all the teacher-coaches and volunteers without whom a night like this would never be possible.

BAUDL Public Debate on March 17

All are warmly invited to join us on Thursday, March 17 at 6pm.  On this night, the Bay Area Urban Debate League (BAUDL) and Standing To Represent Our Next Generation (STRONG)  will host the BAUDL Great Debates at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church in downtown Oakland.  The event will feature some of the most talented young orators of the Bay Area in action, speaking out with passionate wisdom on the hardest and most important issues of our age - all in front of a live audience.

The young leaders of the BAUDL have been hard at work all year honing their debating skills, researching the most crucial political and social issues facing their generation, and developing the power of their words to make positive changes in their communities.  You are warmly invited to join us in celebrating the dedication of these young people, and in discussing solutions to the issues they bring to the table.

Bring your friends and family and come witness the brilliance and devotion of tomorrow’s leaders as they square off against each other in a stimulating collision of intellect.  The event will take place in the great hall at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church at 525 29th St, Oakland, CA 94609- it’s a beautiful space, and a great place to see stirring speeches.
