BAUDL Debaters Speak Out on TV

BAUDL youth leaders pose with the hosts of 7Live

BAUDL debaters put their skills to work as members of the Voicebox for ABC’s 7Live news show on February 1 and 2! Unsurprisingly, this “show with attitude” was a natural second home for our debaters from Fremont High and California College Preparatory Academy. On their two-day visit to 7Live, BAUDL debaters participated in discussions on topics such as the current crisis in Egypt, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband’s decision to complete his space mission, and even the tech duel between Google and Bing. In particular, Fremont senior Cesar Sanchez spoke a few choice words about what he thinks should be done in response to the recent loss of several hundred Oakland high school seniors’ ACT scores.

Bay Area Was Hungry for Debate: Dine for Debate Fundraiser Was a Success!

Thank you to all supporters who came out to eat with BAUDL at the Dine for Debate fundraiser on February 2. Because of all the delicious bites you took at Oliveto, Grand Tavern, and Vo’s, we were able raise crucial funds to maintain our mission of empowering Bay Area youth with the voice, knowledge, and confidence they need to be leaders in their communities.

Given the success of this Dine for Debate fundraiser, BAUDL wants to provide more opportunities for other potential supporters to join in the fun. Keep an eye (and a fork) out for another upcoming Dine for Debate fundraiser!

BAUDL Debaters Shine at the Golden Gate Speech Association Tournament

On January 22, more than two dozen BAUDL debaters woke up bright and early to compete at the Golden Gate Speech Association (GGSA) Tournament at Lowell High School in San Francisco. Featuring some of the most renowned public and private schools in the region, the GGSA tournament challenged BAUDL debaters to step up their game – and they did! Here’s some results:

  • In the varsity division, teams from Fremont and Cal Prep made strong showings in their first regional competition. Skyline debaters Greg Belvin and Zach Seidl only lost a single round!
  • In the junior varsity division, powerhouse Skyline debaters Miracle Chavis and LaTorree Howard went undefeated.
  • In the novice division, our first-year debaters shined against tough competition. Amari Lott and Jordan Wright came out on top, winning three of their four rounds.

Congratulations to all the BAUDL debaters who competed at the GGSA tournament for representing their schools and communities so well! This gives us excellent momentum for BAUDL’s next traveling debut: the UC Berkeley Invitational on February 19 – 21. Good luck, BAUDL debaters!
