Last weekend, more than 80 BAUDL debaters journeyed to the campus of one of the most prestigious universities in the world, but not just for a college visit. They came to argue their cases for political change, to speak, listen, and debate some of the hottest political topics of the modern era.
For some, this was their first time setting foot on the campus of UC Berkeley; for others, it was the first visit to the campus of any university. The hope is that as BAUDL students debate in the classrooms of this institution, as they interact with its students as judges and mentors, they will come to know the university as a place where they can find a real and feasible future for themselves. And it seems to be working; one young man put it like this: “I was a little afraid at first – like, I don’t belong here – but now I feel that I do belong.”
